THIS MONTH
IN THE GARDEN
north
Prepare
houseplants, such as schefflera,
above
, that spent the summer
outdoors to return indoors for
the winter. Check them carefully,
treat for insects and diseased
foliage, and stop feeding them.
Take them indoors before night
temperatures fall into the 50s.
south
The cooler days
and nights this month make it a
good time to install sod for a
new lawn so that it becomes
established before winter. If you
only have a few bare patches in
an existing lawn, you can cut out
the bare spot and plant small
sections of sod.
west
Refrain from pruning
or fertilizing roses, trees, and
shrubs now so plants do not form
tender new growth that will be
easily damaged by frost. Clean,
sharpen, and oil loppers, shears,
and pruners—you are done with
pruning chores until late winter.
Store pruning tools in a dry place.
